Grano

Tally vs Grano: do you need both?

Tally is the book of record. Here is what it cannot see inside a mill, and how the two work together.

This article is in English. Tamil and Hindi versions are coming.

Tally is not the problem

Tally Prime is excellent at what it was built for: ledgers, GST returns, the auditor's trial balance. A rice mill does not need to replace Tally. It needs the operational truth — lots, moisture, runs, godowns, bags — to flow into Tally automatically instead of being re-typed by the accountant at month end.

Where Tally alone breaks down

  • Stock in Tally is a quantity on an item master. It does not know which farmer's paddy is in stack A3, or that it has been sitting there for 70 days.
  • Outturn, broken % and moisture loss are not accounting entries, so they are never recorded.
  • Operators will not open Tally on a phone in the godown. So entries happen later, from memory.
  • Credit control (who owes what since when, with a WhatsApp nudge) is a daily job, not a month-end report.

How the two work together

Grano records every purchase, sale, payment and expense as double-entry ledger rows in the same account names your Tally uses (Paddy Purchase, Rice Sales, Cash, Bank). Export a day, a month or a season as Tally XML — or let the connector push vouchers live to Tally on the office PC. Voids become deletions with the same voucher id, so Tally never carries a ghost entry.

Decision rule

If your biggest headache is GST returns, stay with Tally and a good accountant. If it is 'where did the paddy go' and 'who still owes us', add Grano and keep Tally as the book of record.
